Wimbledon Introduces Video Review Technology for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Replay systems will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the ability to contest certain rulings made by the official, following the practice already in use at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step follows just a season following the All England Club introduced ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to review specific situations, including:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a player can initiate.

Case in Point

A recent example took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire viewed a video and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further innovation at The Championships this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a ball was out or in.

Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
