Tetris Couldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category May Address This Issue

As any major honors show approaches, there’s always an outcry for introducing of new categories to acknowledge overlooked contributions and fill the passions of followers with niche passions.

Another commentator made the case for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are tabletop games, which is someone's personal cause. However, I must insist when I prioritize just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal is the most urgent above others. The demand is this: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and typically spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. But it is an unavoidable compromise within the realm of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they barely qualify as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories actually cover many game types, allowing placement for numerous titles.

Not so for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Think about these outstanding current releases, all very different: building puzzles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Which classification works among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated for anything that year
  • Another imaginative release missed out in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked in 2021
  • Only a few brain-teasers scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're compact experiences, however the design behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most popular titles globally and have been for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with well-known building titles for the title of highest-selling title ever; it also contends as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, while interacting with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. It would be easy to populate a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these represent titles without proper classification in important events. Puzzle game makers operate at the challenging frontier game development, developing some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Just like cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay decades.
