The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
