Critical Role Campaign 4 Reveals the Warriors Group

Since the launch of Campaign 4, new Dungeon Master Brennan Mulligan has maintained audience suspense with rich lore, a diverse cast of heroes, and a gripping narrative featuring angels, demons, and dark forces expanding in influence within the urban setting.

Note: Key plot points for Episode 3 of Campaign 4 are included.

The Combat-Oriented Party Introduced

The third episode concluded with a major cliffhanger and revealed the premier party of adventurers who will separate from the primary party to embark on their own adventure, apart from the remaining groups.

The combat-focused team includes the determined fighter (portrayed by Travis Willingham), the nimble rogue (the talented performer), the fierce warrior (Whitney Moore), Wicander Halovar (the player), and Kattigan Vale (Robbie).

The Reason for Division

With a large ensemble, it was obvious from the beginning that keeping everyone at a single group would be unfeasible.

This explains, the first four episodes of the new season serve as an Prelude, weaving together the individual narratives before dividing into three distinct groups: Warriors, Schemers, and Explorers.

The Nature of the Combat Party

As described by Brennan Lee Mulligan, the Soldiers table is for adventurers who enjoy a typically action-packed fight-heavy gameplay experience where non-violent answers are few and far between.

Initially, characters like the hesitant healer Wicander might appear mismatched, but the developments of the third episode show why these specific adventurers are best suited for the warrior group.

Reasons to Leave

To begin with, the group knows exactly where to head next after a brutal first encounter with The Crow Keepers.

Casimir of Thjazi—whose demise kicked off the narrative’s action—used the enemy for his own means, entering Thjazi’s hideout, striking the character, and stealing all the magical artifacts to auction.

The traitor then cleared his liabilities and ran away to a Halovar stronghouse in Gormalay, Timmony, north of Dol-Makjar, with Teor’s brother hot on his heels.

Individual Reasons

Secondly, each character has a specific drive to depart Dol-Makjar:

  • Thimble, as the companion and closest confidant, desires vengeance.
  • Kattigan is familiar with the northern area and warns that it is a hostile environment.
  • Tyranny and The cleric, having resisted his family’s wishes to kill the fighter and instead saved him, have nowhere else to go.
  • Yet, their position as important members in the powerful family could help the team enter places they normally couldn’t.
  • Moreover, The fighter swore a life debt to The cleric for his deliverance and will now accompany him anywhere.

Fugitives

Finally, all of them are sought by the authorities that control Dol-Makjar for a range of causes, making lingering locally dangerous:

  • The rogue and Kattigan are known criminals.
  • Tyranny and Wicander turned against the powerful family and the army of fiends they are aligned with.
  • The target is marked for death by House Halovar.

This leaves them little choice but to travel to the remote area in search of Casimir.

Upcoming Developments

Based on episode three’s Cooldown, we find out that the warrior group will not appear next week, leaving the remaining eight participants to assemble the Questers and Schemers tables.

Audiences can look forward to discovering which adventurers will be in which group in the season’s last Overture episode, released on next week.
