A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and execution of the country's key government projects.
The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” declared the head of state.
The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency finished the previous year. This project was closely associated with his government's strategic goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The building of both rail lines was supervised by the nation's military, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in civilian works. They were built at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked significant apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party demanded an immediate suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.
This stoppage was requested pending a thorough independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "requires swift accountability."
In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been functioning in full compliance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and operation of these vital projects.
